Sharing & Discovering GPX Routes Online

Someone has already ridden your next route and left the file behind. Here's how to find it, judge it, and return the favor safely.

Where Do GPX Routes Come From?

GPX routes are shared in three main places: route platforms (Strava, Komoot, AllTrails, RideWithGPS, Wikiloc) where every public activity or planned route can usually be exported as a GPX; community sources (trail forums, overlanding and hiking groups, club libraries, land-agency sites) that attach files directly; and friends, who simply send you the file. Every one of them ends the same way — a .gpx file on your device — and because GPX is an open format, a route discovered on any platform can be navigated in any app. The one habit that separates smooth trips from bad surprises: vet every downloaded file before you trust it, because a stranger's GPX carries the stranger's mistakes.

Discovering Routes Worth Riding

  • Route platforms. The big platforms have the deepest libraries and the best search. Getting the file out is platform-specific — our export walkthrough for Strava, Komoot, and AllTrails covers the exact clicks for each.
  • Heatmaps. Platform heatmaps show where people actually travel — a practical reality check on whether that dashed line on the map is a trail or a wish.
  • Communities. Regional forums, overlanding groups, and clubs share GPX files with local context no algorithm has: seasonal closures, gates, water reliability. The file plus the thread is worth more than the file.
  • Recency matters. A five-year-old track predates washouts, reroutes, and closures. Prefer recent files, and cross-check old ones against current maps before committing.

Vetting a Downloaded Route (Two Minutes, Every Time)

  1. Validate the file. Run it through the free GPX Validator — it confirms the XML parses and reports what's actually inside (tracks vs. routes vs. a pile of waypoints). Files that have been through several conversions are routinely mangled.
  2. Analyze the numbers. Drop it into the GPX Analyzer and check distance and elevation gain against the description you downloaded it from. A "moderate 8-miler" that analyzes at 14 miles with 4,000 ft of climbing is a different trip — and this mismatch is common, because gain numbers vary wildly between tools.
  3. Look at the track on the map. Does it follow visible trails and roads, or cut cross-country? Straight lines between points usually mean a hand-drawn route, not a recorded track — navigable, but nobody has proven the ground.
  4. Trim what isn't yours. Shared recordings often include the author's drive to the trailhead or a wander around camp. The GPX Track Editor cuts those in the browser.

Sharing Your Own Tracks — Without Oversharing

A recorded track is a diary of where you were, when. Before a file leaves your hands, three cleanups:

  • Trim the ends. Recordings that start in your driveway publish your address. Split and trim the track so it starts and ends at the trailhead — this is the single most important privacy step, and platforms' "privacy zones" only protect you on the platform, not in the exported file.
  • Strip what the recipient doesn't need. Timestamps reveal your pace and schedule; heart-rate streams are health data. If the point is the route, share a version with the geometry and drop the rest.
  • Name it usefully. BlackCanyonRim_34mi_2026-05.gpx beats track-export-final2.gpx for everyone downstream, and a one-line note about season and water turns a file into a route guide.

Then share the cleaned file the boring way — upload it to a platform as a planned route, attach it to the relevant forum thread, or send it directly. Every check in the previous section is one your recipients get to skip because you did the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Strava route in a different app?

Yes. Export the route or activity as GPX (walkthrough here) and import it anywhere — GPX is the open interchange format, so platforms can't lock a route in.

Is it safe to download GPX files from strangers?

The file itself is plain XML — it can't run code. The risk is the route: wrong difficulty, outdated conditions, or hand-drawn lines nobody has traveled. That's what the two-minute vetting pass (validate, analyze, inspect) is for.

How do I share a route without revealing where I live?

Trim the recording to trailhead-to-trailhead before sharing, and check the start point on a map before it leaves your device. Platform privacy zones do not survive GPX export — the exported file contains the raw points.

Should I share a recorded track or a planned route?

A cleaned recorded track proves the ground: someone actually went there. A planned route is a proposal. Both are useful — just label which one you're sharing, because the difference is exactly what the next person needs to know.
